INTERVIEW: Jacinta (Marine biologist)

1. WHY IS CONSERVING AND PROTECTION THE OCEANS IMPORTANT TO YOU?

I grew up with a huge love for the ocean and ever since i first ventured into the ocean it’s been very difficult to get me out! I’ve been fortunate enough to explore a lot of the Great Barrier Reef and interact with its incredible inhabitants while also witnessing it grow and change over the last four years. It’s a place that is extremely important to me, and all of the world! Reef ecosystems protect the coastline, provide food and medicine and are home to an incredible range of biodiversity. We need to conserve and protect these extraordinary places

2. WHAT ARE YOU DOING THAT IS BETTER FOR THE OCEANS?

My work focuses on education and awareness, both in person and online. I work as a marine biologist and guide on lady Elliot island where I educate people in person, and then when I go home I can reach people in the online space too. I’m trying to remove the fear around sharks and increase the awareness around plastic pollution and teach people about what they can do to help.  I also do things in my life at home like reducing plastic usage, reducing energy and picking up trash!

3. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE SURFING INDUSTRY SPECIFICALLY CAN BE DOING TO SUPPORT THE HEALTH OF THE OCEANS?

These are people that spend a huge quantity of their time in the ocean and many are looked up to as role models and ambassadors for the ocean. I think they can set a good example and others will follow!

4. CAN YOU RECOMMEND ANY BOOKS, BRANDS, ORGANISATIONS OR PEOPLE OUR FOLLOWERS SHOULD CHECK OUT FOR INSPIRATION?
