INTERVIEW: José (Marlin Fins)

INTERVIEW: José (Marlin Fins)

1. WHY IS CONSERVING AND PROTECTION THE OCEANS IMPORTANT TO YOU?
The importance of preserving the oceans as the origin of all life is abundantly demonstrated. It is a huge task, but in my opinion it will not be successful if at the same time we do not create a fairer, more balanced and sustainable society.

Just as it is not possible to save turtles, without preserving the oceans, it is also not possible to preserve the oceans, without our consumerist and disposable mentality undergoing a profound recycling. I do not advocate a return to the caves, but a cultural and technological leap into the future.

2. WHAT ARE YOU DOING THAT IS BETTER FOR THE OCEANS?
Marlin's contribution to the health of the oceans is very modest, we recycle defective parts or other problems arising mainly from the automotive industry or machine construction, due to the rigidity and tenacity properties of some plastics applied there, most of the time in replacement of metal parts.

Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of plastics that roam the oceans do not have the necessary properties for manufacturing purposes: But they are excellent for producing many other objects: The problem is to remove them from the water, in our opinion there will have to be a worldwide program, the nations as a whole have the capacity, and the means (including the military| more than enough to remove the detritus that roam the oceans.) Recently, in the covid19 case, humanity showed that it quickly mobilizes in the face of an imminent threat. and we read, we cannot ignore, that the threat to the oceans is a threat to ourselves.

What are we waiting for?!

3. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE SURFING INDUSTRY SPECIFICALLY CAN BE DOING TO SUPPORT THE HEALTH OF THE OCEANS?
The so-called surf industry, needs a deep reflection on the path to follow, it does not differ in its procedures from others, produces in China and other Asian countries with cheap labor, and sells in the rest of the world. The multiple initiatives of a local base have been very positive, taking advantage of their knowledge, as well as the introduction of new materials and more sustainable processes. It's these initiatives that the surf industry of the future may come up with.

4. CAN YOU RECOMMEND ANY BOOKS, BRANDS, ORGANISATIONS OR PEOPLE OUR FOLLOWERS SHOULD CHECK OUT FOR INSPIRATION?
I recommend that we revisit the life and work of Commander Jacques Cousteau,
this because I think the current ecological message is a little confused, and sometimes even fundamentalist.

In my opinion, you are too focused on the materials, and forget that the good or
bad use we make of them is our sole responsibility.

For example. The war on plastic that is in fashion today is both unfair and
uninformative, because it is a fantastic material, light abundant, cheap, which does
not know the word impossible in its multiple applications, and whose recycling is
the cleanest, easiest and lowest energy cost, when compared to all others in our
day to day.

Once again, plastic or other is not to blame for the misuse we give it, nor for this
disposable carousel that has become our life. We exchange mobile phones, cars,
household appliances, and a million more things when the useful life of these
objects is not to 10% arrived.
